The Prato Nevoso ski area

Prato Nevoso is part of the Mondolè Ski ski area: 34 lifts, 130 km of pistes, from 807 to 2.085 metres.

A single ski pass covers Prato Nevoso, Artesina and Frabosa Soprana: 130 km of pistes and 1300 m of vertical.

Prato Nevoso itself has 50 km over 18 runs on a plateau suited to families and beginners.

The adult day pass in high season is around 52 €, on top of the rental when you work out the cost of the day. Many ski areas use dynamic pricing: buying it online a few days ahead costs less than at the ticket office that morning. Updated rates here.

When to ski in Prato Nevoso

The top of the lift system is 2.085 metres: the season relies on artificial snowmaking and cold nights. The safe window runs from late December to early March, which is also when the rental shops are at full stretch.

Christmas week through Epiphany is when rental shops run out of the most requested sizes, especially men’s boots in sizes 42 to 44 and all the kids’ gear. If you’re skiing then, book your gear when you book your accommodation. In January, outside weekends, you’ll find everything with no queue and often at a lower rate.

What gear to bring

130 km of pistes is enough for four or five days without skiing the same runs over and over. An all-round piste ski works for most people; ask for a ski 5 cm shorter than recommended if you’re only in your second or third week on skis.

The boot matters more than the ski. A bad boot ruins the week, a mediocre ski only slows you down. Try it on with the socks you’ll actually wear, walk around the shop for a minute and check that your heel stays put without your toes hitting the front. If it hurts halfway through the week, go back to the shop: the swap is almost always free.

The helmet usually isn’t included and costs 3–5 € a day. It’s compulsory for under-18s on Italian slopes, so budget for it from the start.

Daily or seasonal hire, for kids

If your child skis more than two weeks in a season, seasonal hire costs less. It typically runs 150 to 300 € for an adult and less for kids, with size swaps included through the winter. For a foot that grows two sizes between December and March, it’s the only option that makes sense: buy skis for an eight-year-old and you’ll be buying them again at nine.

Skis idle eight months a year

If you own a decent set, it sits in the cellar all summer. Rented out, it earns 250–600 € a season, with verified identity and insurance included on every rental.
