The Passo del Tonale ski area
Passo del Tonale is part of the Pontedilegno-Tonale (Adamello Ski) ski area: 30 lifts, 100 km of pistes, from 1.121 to 3.000 metres. The season usually runs from late November to early May.
The ski area links Ponte di Legno, Temù and Passo del Tonale up to the Presena glacier, with pistes reaching 3000 m.
46 runs over 100 km served by 30 lifts, one of the largest ski areas between Lombardia and Trentino.
The adult day pass in high season is around 68 €, on top of the rental when you work out the cost of the day. Many ski areas use dynamic pricing: buying it online a few days ahead costs less than at the ticket office that morning. Updated rates here.
When to ski in Passo del Tonale
With lifts climbing to 3.000 metres, Passo del Tonale holds its snow even when lower resorts are struggling. It’s the place where booking ahead in December and March makes sense, the two months when other resorts are most exposed.
Christmas week through Epiphany is when rental shops run out of the most requested sizes, especially men’s boots in sizes 42 to 44 and all the kids’ gear. If you’re skiing then, book your gear when you book your accommodation. In January, outside weekends, you’ll find everything with no queue and often at a lower rate.
What gear to bring
100 km of pistes is enough for four or five days without skiing the same runs over and over. An all-round piste ski works for most people; ask for a ski 5 cm shorter than recommended if you’re only in your second or third week on skis.
The boot matters more than the ski. A bad boot ruins the week, a mediocre ski only slows you down. Try it on with the socks you’ll actually wear, walk around the shop for a minute and check that your heel stays put without your toes hitting the front. If it hurts halfway through the week, go back to the shop: the swap is almost always free.
The helmet usually isn’t included and costs 3–5 € a day. It’s compulsory for under-18s on Italian slopes, so budget for it from the start.
Where to rent skis in Passo del Tonale
Some rental shops active in Passo del Tonale and within a few kilometres. Many are village shops with ski storage at the bottom of the lifts: check opening hours and availability before you go, especially at the start and end of the season.
Daily or seasonal hire, for kids
If your child skis more than two weeks in a season, seasonal hire costs less. It typically runs 150 to 300 € for an adult and less for kids, with size swaps included through the winter. For a foot that grows two sizes between December and March, it’s the only option that makes sense: buy skis for an eight-year-old and you’ll be buying them again at nine.
Skis idle eight months a year
If you own a decent set, it sits in the cellar all summer. Rented out, it earns 250–600 € a season, with verified identity and insurance included on every rental.
