A child car seat from the airport car rental desk costs €8 to €15 a day, capped at €70 to €100 per rental. The same seat from a private owner costs €3 to €6 a day. For a week in Sardinia, that is the difference between €80 and €30. Strollers follow the same logic, with one addition: the all-terrain model for the mountains, which nobody buys for a single week, rents for €15 to €25 a day.
This guide starts with a practical question: bring or rent? Then it covers prices, what to check on the label and how to book in the places where demand is highest.
Bring from home or rent on the spot
Almost every airline carries two child items free, usually a stroller and a car seat. Cost is not the issue. The issue is the seat that comes back with a crack in the base after going through the hold, or the one that does not arrive at all. A seat that has taken an impact must be replaced, and nobody sees an impact in the hold.
A city stroller copes better with flying: it folds and goes on at the gate. The car seat does not. For flights with a rental car at the other end, renting the seat makes sense. The stroller depends: if yours is light and folds with one hand, bring it. If it is the big model with the carrycot, leave it at home.
By train or in your own car the question does not arise: bring what you have.

The car rental desk is convenient because the seat is already fitted when you collect the car. It is also where the seat has done the most kilometres and nobody tells you how many. Ask to see it before you sign.
What to check before putting a child in it
A rented seat, whoever it comes from, needs a look at five points. It takes two minutes.
- The orange approval label: it must show ECE R129 (i-Size) or ECE R44/04. R44/04 seats have not been sold new since September 2024 but remain legal to use. An R44/03 or a seat with no label should not be used.
- The production date moulded into the plastic: most manufacturers give a useful life of 6 to 10 years. Beyond that the plastic becomes brittle.
- The harness: no fraying, the buckle clicks cleanly, the adjuster slides.
- The shell: no cracks, especially in the base and around the Isofix connectors.
- Compatibility: Isofix needs a car with the anchor points (all cars since 2011). A belt-fitted seat works in any car.
Always ask whether the seat has been in an accident. A private owner usually tells you unprompted, because it is their seat and their children use it. At the car rental desk the answer is almost always “we don’t know”.
Where demand is highest and how to book
Car seat rental searches in Italy cluster around the airports of the islands and the South: Olbia, Cagliari, Palermo, Catania, Bari. These are the destinations where families fly in and pick up a car. The peak is July.
For all-terrain strollers the geography is the opposite: Andalo, Moena, Val di Fassa, San Martino di Castrozza, Pozza di Fassa. Families who go to the mountains in summer and discover that the city stroller does not cope with the trails.
At the car rental company, add the seat to the online booking, always. Ask at the desk in July and there will not be one. Peer to peer, look for a listing in your destination at least a week ahead and ask in the chat for delivery at the airport or your accommodation: many owners do it for an extra €5 to €10.
If you have car seats and strollers at home
A 9–36 kg seat lasts six years and a child sits in it for two or three. The rest of the time it lives in the cellar, next to the stroller the second child refused and the travel cot used twice.
These are among the least seasonal rental categories there are: families travel all year. A car seat at €5 a day, rented forty days a year, makes €200. An all-terrain stroller in a mountain resort, at €12 a day over the summer, makes €400 to €600.
There is one rule: only list what you would let your own children use today. R129 or R44/04 label, under six years old, no accidents. Write it in the listing with the production date: it is the first thing every parent looks for. On Sharepact every renter is ID-verified and every rental is insured, as our guide on renting out safely explains.
FAQ
Is a car seat mandatory in a rental car too?
Yes. In Italy children under 150 cm travel in an approved restraint system, in any car. The fine is €83 to €333 plus 5 licence points.
Can I rent just the seat and use it in a relative’s car?
Yes. This is the typical case of grandparents picking you up at the airport: you rent the seat from a private owner and fit it in their car.
How does it compare with buying one locally?
A cheap new seat costs €80. For one week that is three weeks of peer-to-peer rental, and then it sits there. Above three weeks of holiday, buying starts to break even. Our guide on when renting beats buying has the maths.
