Ski rental Sestola: how much it costs

These are the rates you’ll find at the foot of the slopes. Price varies mostly with the equipment tier: a basic set and a high-end one can be twenty euros apart per day. Most shops cut their rates from the third day onward, which is why a week costs less than five single days.

The Sestola ski area

Sestola is part of the Cimone ski area: 18 lifts, 50 km of pistes, from 900 to 1,976 metres. The season generally runs from December to March.

Monte Cimone is the highest peak in the northern Apennines, and the ski area covers Sestola, Fanano, Riolunato and Montecreto.

26 runs and over 1,000 metres of vertical drop: it’s the go-to resort for people setting off from Bologna, Modena and the Romagna coast.

The adult day pass in high season runs around €55, on top of the rental when you work out the cost of the day. Many ski areas use dynamic pricing: buying online a few days ahead costs less than at the ticket office on the morning. Updated rates here.

When to ski in Sestola

The top altitude is 1,976 metres: the season relies on snowmaking and cold nights. The safe window runs from late December to early March, which is also when rental shops are busiest.

The week between Christmas and Epiphany is when rental shops run out of the most requested sizes, especially men’s boots in sizes 42 to 44 and all children’s gear. If you’re skiing then, book equipment when you book accommodation. In January, outside weekends, you’ll find everything with no queue and often at a lower rate.

What equipment to get

The ski area covers 50 km: a weekend or family-base size, where an easy, manageable ski makes more sense than a speed-oriented model. For children, ask for the full package with helmet included; it costs less than buying the pieces separately.

The boot matters more than the ski. The wrong boot ruins the week; a mediocre ski just slows you down. Try it on with the socks you’ll actually wear, walk around the shop for a few minutes and check your heel stays put without your toes touching the front. If it hurts halfway through the week, go back to the rental shop: swapping it is almost always free.

A helmet usually isn’t included and costs €3–5 a day. It’s compulsory for under-18s on Italian slopes, so factor it in from the start.

Some rental shops operating in Sestola and within a few kilometres. Many are village shops with ski storage at the foot of the lifts: check opening hours and availability before you turn up, especially at the start and end of the season.

Daily or season-long rental for children

If your child skis more than two weeks in a season, a season-long rental costs less. It typically runs €150–300 for an adult and less for children, with size swaps included through the winter. For a foot that grows two sizes between December and March, it’s the only option that makes sense: buy skis for an eight-year-old and you’ll be buying them again at nine.

Skis sitting idle for eight months a year

If you own a decent set, it sits in storage all summer. Listed for rent, it earns €250–600 a season, with verified identity and insurance included on every booking.
