The Folgaria ski area
Folgaria is part of the Alpe Cimbra ski area: 40 lifts, 104 km of pistes, from 1.200 to 1.850 metres. The season usually runs from late November to early April.
The Alpe Cimbra ski area links Folgaria, Fiorentini and Lavarone: 104 km of pistes between 1.200 and 1.850 metres, 40 lifts.
Snowmaking covers the whole area, and the pistes are among the most family-friendly in Trentino.
The adult day pass in high season is around 59 €, on top of the rental when you work out the cost of the day. Many ski areas use dynamic pricing: buying it online a few days ahead costs less than at the ticket office that morning. Updated rates here.
When to ski in Folgaria
The top of the lift system is 1.850 metres: the season relies on artificial snowmaking and cold nights. The safe window runs from late December to early March, which is also when the rental shops are at full stretch.
Christmas week through Epiphany is when rental shops run out of the most requested sizes, especially men’s boots in sizes 42 to 44 and all the kids’ gear. If you’re skiing then, book your gear when you book your accommodation. In January, outside weekends, you’ll find everything with no queue and often at a lower rate.
What gear to bring
104 km of pistes is enough for four or five days without skiing the same runs over and over. An all-round piste ski works for most people; ask for a ski 5 cm shorter than recommended if you’re only in your second or third week on skis.
The boot matters more than the ski. A bad boot ruins the week, a mediocre ski only slows you down. Try it on with the socks you’ll actually wear, walk around the shop for a minute and check that your heel stays put without your toes hitting the front. If it hurts halfway through the week, go back to the shop: the swap is almost always free.
The helmet usually isn’t included and costs 3–5 € a day. It’s compulsory for under-18s on Italian slopes, so budget for it from the start.
Where to rent skis in Folgaria
Rental shops cluster at the bottom of the lifts and along the main street of town. Ask if they offer ski storage: leaving your boots and gear up at altitude saves you loading the car every morning, and it usually costs a few euros a day.
Daily or seasonal hire, for kids
If your child skis more than two weeks in a season, seasonal hire costs less. It typically runs 150 to 300 € for an adult and less for kids, with size swaps included through the winter. For a foot that grows two sizes between December and March, it’s the only option that makes sense: buy skis for an eight-year-old and you’ll be buying them again at nine.
Skis idle eight months a year
If you own a decent set, it sits in the cellar all summer. Rented out, it earns 250–600 € a season, with verified identity and insurance included on every rental.
