Paddleboard and kayak rental in Italy: prices, where and which board

Team Sharepact·September 29, 2026·4 min read

A paddleboard rents for €10 to €15 an hour on the beach and €25 to €40 for a full day. Peer to peer, an inflatable board with pump and paddle goes for €15 to €25 a day. A single kayak costs a little more, a double €40 to €60 a day. A decent inflatable paddleboard costs €250 to €600 to buy, and at the end of summer it gets deflated and put in the cellar until June.

Paddleboard and kayak rental searches in Italy are concentrated between June and August, with August alone worth a third of the year. Outside those three months finding a board is easy and cheaper. Inside them, it helps to know what to ask for.

Beach rental has one advantage: the board is already inflated and in the water. Peer to peer it arrives in a backpack, 12 to 15 kg, and you inflate it yourself with the hand pump in eight to ten minutes. In return you keep it all day and take it wherever you like, the lake in the morning and the sea in the afternoon.

Which board to ask for

For 90% of people the answer is an all-round board of 10’6″ or 11′, 32 to 34 inches wide. It carries up to 95 kg, it is stable, it works on lakes and calm sea. Under 60 kg you can go down to 10′. Over 95 kg, or with a child up front, you need 11’6″ or a 34-inch model.

Touring boards, narrow and 12’6″ long, go faster but tip beginners over. If you have never paddleboarded, do not ask for one.

Check the pressure: an inflatable board should be taken to 15 psi, and the pump gauge shows it. At 10 psi it bends in the middle and feels like standing on a mattress. That is the mistake that makes people say “paddleboarding is not for me” when all they had was a half-inflated board.

The rules on the water

Every Italian coastal municipality publishes a bathing ordinance, and almost all say the same things. Within 300 metres of the shore, where swimmers are, go slowly and stay out of the way. Beyond 300 metres a life jacket becomes mandatory, and in many ordinances so does the leash, the cord tying your ankle to the board. Red flag, nobody goes out.

Wind is the only thing that really matters. With an offshore wind, the one pushing out to sea, a beginner covers a hundred metres in no time and then cannot get back. Check the direction before getting in and stay along the coast, not perpendicular to it.

Where people search most

Lake Garda, Sardinia and the island of Elba are where paddleboard rental searches are highest. For kayaks the Conero leads: Sirolo, Numana and Portonovo, with caves you can only reach from the water. Then Naples and its coast, and Lake Iseo.

On Garda the morning is almost always calm, the wind arrives after noon. On Elba and in Sardinia the problem is the reverse: the best coves are the ones with no rental, and whoever arrives with a board in a backpack has them to themselves.

If you already own a board

A paddleboard bought for €400 and used four days a summer costs €100 per day of use. Listed at €20 a day, for twenty days between June and August, it makes €400 in a season. An inflatable board is among the easiest things to rent out: it fits in a backpack, it does not break, and handover can happen on the beach.

In the listing give length and width, maximum weight, what is included (pump, paddle, leash, fin) and the recommended pressure. Ask for it back rinsed in fresh water and dry: salt in the seams is the only thing that ruins it. Our guide on how much you can earn renting out your stuff has figures by category. FAQ

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. The jacket helps, but paddleboarding involves falling in, and non-swimmers should not get on.

Paddleboard or kayak for a beginner?

Kayak. You sit, you do not fall, you go further with less effort. Paddleboarding gets more fun after the second outing.

Can I bring my dog?

On a wide board yes, with its own jacket. Ask the owner first: claws leave marks on an inflatable deck.

How long does an inflatable board last?

Eight to ten years if rinsed and stored in the shade. Two if left inflated in the sun all summer.
