The Tarvisio ski area

Tarvisio is part of the Tarvisio – Monte Lussari ski area: 10 lifts, 24 km of pistes, from 750 to 1.760 metres.

Tarvisio sits where Italy, Austria and Slovenia meet: 24 km of downhill pistes and 10 lifts.

It’s also one of Italy’s capitals of cross-country skiing, with 55 km of trails, and the Monte Lussari sanctuary is reached by gondola.

The adult day pass in high season is around 44 €, on top of the rental when you work out the cost of the day. Many ski areas use dynamic pricing: buying it online a few days ahead costs less than at the ticket office that morning. Updated rates here.

When to ski in Tarvisio

The top of the lift system is 1.760 metres: the season relies on artificial snowmaking and cold nights. The safe window runs from late December to early March, which is also when the rental shops are at full stretch.

Christmas week through Epiphany is when rental shops run out of the most requested sizes, especially men’s boots in sizes 42 to 44 and all the kids’ gear. If you’re skiing then, book your gear when you book your accommodation. In January, outside weekends, you’ll find everything with no queue and often at a lower rate.

What gear to bring

The ski area measures 24 km: this is weekend-trip or family-base territory, where an easy, manageable ski beats a speed-focused model. For kids, ask directly for the full package with helmet, it costs less than the separate pieces.

The boot matters more than the ski. A bad boot ruins the week, a mediocre ski only slows you down. Try it on with the socks you’ll actually wear, walk around the shop for a minute and check that your heel stays put without your toes hitting the front. If it hurts halfway through the week, go back to the shop: the swap is almost always free.

The helmet usually isn’t included and costs 3–5 € a day. It’s compulsory for under-18s on Italian slopes, so budget for it from the start.

Some rental shops active in Tarvisio and within a few kilometres. Many are village shops with ski storage at the bottom of the lifts: check opening hours and availability before you go, especially at the start and end of the season.

Daily or seasonal hire, for kids

If your child skis more than two weeks in a season, seasonal hire costs less. It typically runs 150 to 300 € for an adult and less for kids, with size swaps included through the winter. For a foot that grows two sizes between December and March, it’s the only option that makes sense: buy skis for an eight-year-old and you’ll be buying them again at nine.

Skis idle eight months a year

If you own a decent set, it sits in the cellar all summer. Rented out, it earns 250–600 € a season, with verified identity and insurance included on every rental.
