Where renting makes sense
Demand clusters in two different places. In the big cities (Rome, Milan, Turin) independent rental shops coexist with bike-sharing schemes, and a classic rental pays off from half a day up, or whenever you need an e-bike. In the tourist areas it’s the local shops that do most of the business: along the mountain cycle paths, on the coast and on the islands you’ll find the widest choice, with e-bikes everywhere. At peak times, in either case, book a day ahead.
The right season for renting a bike
From April to October almost everything is open. July and August are the months when e-bikes sell out first, so reserve the day before. Spring and early autumn are the sweet spot: mild weather, shorter queues at the rental counter and often lower rates. In the mountains the season is shorter, June to September; on the coast and in the cities you can ride all year, and in winter many mountain shops switch from bikes to skis and snowshoes without ever closing. Travelling with kids? Check that child seats and helmets come in the right sizes: nearly every shop has them, but on busy days they run out just like the e-bikes.
